The 27-year-old forward joined Aston Villa from Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of 2025, but his opportunities in England were limited. Across 46 appearances for the Premier League club, he scored 10 goals and supplied two assists.
Malen moved to Roma on loan at the start of 2026, with the Italian club subsequently making the transfer permanent following his successful opening months.
Reflecting on his departure, he made clear that the decision was driven by his desire for regular football and a more significant role.
“It was my decision. I wanted to play and be part of a team where I could go out on the pitch every weekend and play an important role,” Malen told Corriere dello Sport.
“At that stage, I didn’t feel important, so I think I made the best choice. Today, I feel I’m in the right place with the right people.”
The change of environment has brought an immediate improvement in his output. Malen has scored six goals in his first five Serie A appearances this season, putting him at the top of the league’s scoring charts.
His first appearance for Roma proved particularly memorable, as he scored a hat-trick against Fiorentina. The performance helped establish an early connection with the supporters and gave him confidence that the move could deliver something special.
“Getting off to such a good start and scoring a hat-trick was decisive,” he said.
“As a team, we were strong and united, and I immediately had a very good feeling. We can build on moments like these and achieve something special.”
Malen has also praised head coach Gian Piero Gasperini for the confidence he has received since arriving in Rome.
“The coach and my team-mates show great trust in me, and all of that helps me become the player I dreamed of being,” he said. “You know he would never lie to you about anything.”
The forward has been encouraged by the quality throughout the squad, singling out young midfielder Niccolò Pisilli and France international Manu Koné for particular praise. He has also highlighted his connection with Paulo Dybala.
Malen’s Roma record has continued to strengthen, with 21 goals and four assists in 26 competitive appearances for the club.
AS Roma’s early-season form has given him further reason to believe he made the right move, while his individual performances have underlined the value of finding a team where he feels trusted.
The next test comes against Como, managed by Cesc Fàbregas, as Malen looks to maintain his scoring run and help Roma build on their promising start.
