Málaga have extended the contracts of attacking midfielder Dani Lorenzo and head coach Juanfran Funes by one year each following their promotion to Primera División, with both now committed until 2029.

Lorenzo was one of the key figures in the promotion campaign, contributing four goals and two assists while starting 37 of the season's matches and accumulating 2,800 minutes on the pitch. His release clause has also been increased as a result of the promotion, and the club have made clear they will not be entertaining offers for him.

Funes's extension was celebrated at the club, representing a remarkable turn for a coach who had at one point been considering a return to teaching — a profession he combined with football management for a significant period of his career. His input in squad planning has been central to the preparations for Primera, and sporting director Loren Juarros has placed considerable weight on his opinion in identifying signings.

The first week after promotion also saw five players leave: Dorrio, Brasanac, Víctor García, Gabilondo and Montero have all departed the squad ahead of Málaga's return to the top flight.

The five departures and two extensions in the space of a week suggest Málaga have a clear plan for building the squad that will face Primera División football next season. The priority for Funes and the board is now to add reinforcements rather than manage further outgoings, and the sporting director's close relationship with the coach gives the club a coherent structure as they prepare for the challenge ahead.

Málaga's return to the top flight for the first time in several years is one of the more compelling stories of the summer in Spanish football, and the early decisions made in the days after promotion suggest the club intends to face that challenge with ambition rather than merely hoping to survive.
