According to Estadio Deportivo, the former Sevilla and Real Madrid coach wants to honour his existing commitment to Qatar’s national team, making an appointment at the Barcelona-based club difficult to arrange.
Lopetegui, 60, is contracted to the Qatar Football Association until February 2027. By then, Qatar will have completed its participation in the AFC Asian Cup, giving the coach a natural point at which to reassess his future.
Espanyol are searching for a new manager after parting company with González following their Copa del Rey elimination against fourth-tier Sestao River. The 4-3 extra-time defeat came during a difficult run of league results that left the club in the relegation zone.
Lopetegui has emerged as one of the names associated with the vacancy, but his contractual situation presents a significant obstacle. Even if Espanyol are interested in bringing him to the club, they would need to convince him to leave his current role before his agreement expires.
The report also points to the positive personal relationship between Lopetegui and Espanyol sporting director Monchi. The pair have worked in Spanish football for years, but that connection may not be enough to secure a deal while the coach remains committed to Qatar.
Lopetegui has extensive experience at club and international level. He previously managed Sevilla and Real Madrid, as well as Spain’s national team, and has also coached Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
For Espanyol, the immediate priority is to find a successor capable of stabilising a team that has struggled for results. Lopetegui’s experience would make him an attractive candidate, but the latest report suggests the club may need to look elsewhere if it wants to appoint a new manager without waiting until next year.
