Florian Wirtz says private conversations with Jürgen Klopp have helped him rediscover his spark after scoring in Germany’s 2-0 win over Serbia again.

Florian Wirtz has credited conversations with Jürgen Klopp for helping him rediscover his spark after scoring in Germany’s 2-0 Nations League win over Serbia.

The Liverpool playmaker impressed in Munich as Klopp secured his first victory as Germany head coach, scoring the second goal with a sharp turn inside the penalty area before calmly finishing.

Wirtz had been given the captain’s armband and was involved throughout an encouraging performance, with Germany producing a more fluid attacking display.

Liverpool Echo reported that Klopp had spoken with Wirtz during the break, and the midfielder revealed afterwards that the Germany boss had encouraged him to return to the style that has made him one of Europe’s leading young attacking players.

“Yes, of course [we have spoken] and he wants me to play the kind of football people are used to seeing from me,” Wirtz said.

“We had a few conversations, and he gave me a few things to take on board and try to implement. I'm glad he spoke with me. It is definitely heading in the right direction [under Klopp].”

Wirtz also joked that the ideal conditions for his game would involve having plenty of space, something Serbia provided as the visitors became increasingly disorganised.

“What do I need to be at my best? Ideally, a lot of space in every game so I can do what I want! (laughs). It was a very good pass from Maxi (Mittelstadt).

“I was hoping he would play it because it wasn't easy, and then I saw someone coming behind me and did what I did.”

Wirtz insisted his performance was not specifically inspired by wearing the armband, although he felt Serbia’s approach helped Germany find room between the lines.

“I wouldn't say [my performance was] because of the armband.

“But of course the opponent gave us more space because they were a bit more disorganised and perhaps looked to counter more.

“That created more spaces that we utilizsed well. I think the combination play from the back line all the way to the striker was very good, as everyone wanted the ball and every individual could showcase themselves.”

The result was important for Germany after a difficult opening to Klopp’s tenure, and Wirtz felt the performance could provide a platform for the team.

“It was of course important to win again, also for the team spirit, and to send a message to the outside world that we are good footballers and a good footballing nation. It was definitely a step in the right direction.”

Wirtz’s display offered Liverpool an encouraging sign too, with the midfielder showing the attacking freedom Klopp wants to see from him.
