Van Dijk features in the 26-man party named by new Netherlands head coach Xavi for the country's forthcoming Nations League fixtures, which include home and away meetings with Serbia as well as games against Germany and Greece during the extended international window.
His international future had been shrouded in uncertainty following Ronald Koeman's departure after the World Cup and the defender turning 35 in July.
Van Dijk had made clear before meeting his new head coach that he still believed he had a role to play.
"I feel that I can still be valuable and important to the team," he said recently. "If we see eye to eye on that, we have two good years ahead of us leading up to Euro 2028. And if not, then we'll see."
Xavi was at Anfield last week to watch Van Dijk help Liverpool beat Atlético Madrid in their opening Champions League fixture, and held talks with the centre-back around that visit.
Van Dijk's recall means he will continue building on his 96 caps for the Netherlands, with the century mark potentially within reach next month. He is joined in the squad by Liverpool team-mates Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, along with the recalled Jeremie Frimpong, who had missed out on selection for the World Cup over the summer.
The centre-back has been Netherlands captain for several years and remains a key figure for Liverpool under new head coach Andoni Iraola, despite his advancing years prompting periodic questions over his long-term international future.
Xavi's decision to include him, rather than begin a rebuilding process without one of the squad's most experienced players, suggests the new head coach sees a continued role for Van Dijk as he looks to build his own identity with the national team following Koeman's exit.
The Dutch federation's appointment of Xavi, the first foreign coach to take charge of the Oranje since 1978, has already generated considerable interest in how he intends to reshape the squad ahead of Euro 2028.
