James Trafford's arrival at Elland Road this summer has left Daniel Farke needing a new deputy behind him, and Leeds have settled on a target 6,700 miles away in Buenos Aires.
San Lorenzo goalkeeper Orlando Gill now has a formal offer from Leeds United sitting on his club's desk, according to Paraguayan journalist Carlín Correa, speaking on Ñandutí's La Gran Jugada programme, making Leeds the first of Gill's several suitors to move beyond mere interest.
The 26-year-old, who stands at 6ft 6in, has been chased by an unusually large group of clubs since a standout World Cup, including Ipswich Town and, briefly, Aston Villa. Manchester United's interest has been the most persistent of all, which is puzzling given Senne Lammens is established as the Red Devils' undisputed number one and Karl Darlow has already arrived as back-up on a free transfer.
Whether that interest translates into a bid of their own may now depend on how San Lorenzo respond to Leeds.
Gill has made only 59 senior appearances despite his age, a reflection of joining San Lorenzo as a reserve option in 2024 before working his way to number one.
It was the World Cup that transformed his profile: he was named FIFA's Player of the Match against both Germany and France, and saved two penalties in Paraguay's round-of-32 shootout win over the Germans. He remains under contract in Argentina until December 2027, giving San Lorenzo no pressure to sell beyond the price they're offered.
For Leeds, who have already spent a club-record fee in excess of £40m on Trafford this summer, adding Gill would complete a goalkeeping overhaul built around two of the World Cup's standout shot-stoppers.
