Leeds agree £20m Struijk sale to Brighton as eight-year stay ends

Leeds United have agreed to sell Pascal Struijk to Brighton in a £20m deal, ending an eight-year association with a centre-back who could not be persuaded to sign a new contract at Elland Road.

Brighton have yet to formalise their bid but the agreement was reached verbally on Saturday. Struijk, 26, joined Leeds United in 2018 and made 196 appearances for the club, becoming one of their most consistent performers in recent seasons.

Leeds had proposed a new deal but Struijk wanted a fresh challenge, and with his contract winding down, the club could not afford to risk losing him on a free transfer next summer. The sale to Brighton resolves that situation while bringing in a significant fee.

The move is part of an active window for Brighton, who sold Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham Hotspur for £52m and had three bids for Luka Vuskovic rejected. They have opened talks with Atalanta for 18-year-old Honest Ahanor and with Venezia over Austria's World Cup defender Michael Svoboda as they look to reshape their defensive options.

Struijk's departure leaves Leeds needing to address the gap left by one of their most reliable players, while Brighton add a left-footed centre-back to a squad that Fabian Hürzeler continues to build around youth and technical quality.

For Brighton, the timing of the deal allows them to move quickly on rebuilding their defensive structure. The addition of Struijk to a backline already undergoing change — with discussions ongoing for Ahanor and Svoboda — reflects a systematic approach to recruitment that has defined the club's model in recent seasons.

Struijk's left-footedness and composure in possession make him a natural fit for a Brighton side that values technical defenders comfortable playing out from the back.
