"Let them know that, if they are willing to sell the player during this summer transfer window, we would be ready to buy him, provided we can reach an agreement around the offer we've made them," Laporta said.
Barcelona's position has not shifted from their standing âŹ100m proposal â a figure far below the striker's âŹ500m release clause, which Atletico Madrid have repeatedly said is the only number that would trigger a sale.
The Barcelona president struck a conciliatory but firm tone throughout his remarks.
"We remain very interested in JuliĂĄn Ălvarez. We would like them to accept our offer, and we are doing so with the utmost respect towards AtlĂ©tico de Madrid. We would like to reach an understanding," he said, adding: "It seems the player wants to come to Barça, so we maintain our hope, our intention, with all due respect to AtlĂ©tico de Madrid, to be able to sign the player."
Laporta walked through the club's account of the negotiation, describing a direct approach that had initially been rebuffed.
"I want to say that we have great respect for AtlĂ©tico de Madrid and its leadership. We've known each other for many years. We made a club-to-club offer. I ratified that offer in a personal phone call with Miguel Ăngel Gil. They told me they had no intention of selling because they had no alternative to JuliĂĄn, and I told him we were interested, but that we respected their decision not to sell â although if they found an alternative within this market, we remained interested in making the signing," he said.
He explained that Barcelona had since stepped their interest back up after learning of Atlético's own talks elsewhere.
"Together with Deco, we thought that since they weren't selling him, we'd leave the matter on hold. What's happened? We've received information that Atlético de Madrid is negotiating with other clubs over the player. We remain present with our offer because it's common knowledge that the player wants to come to Barça. This situation has created a lot of noise, which hasn't been driven by any action from Barça.
"We spoke with Enrique Cerezo and he later spoke publicly. I have great appreciation for him, and I want to say that Barça has handled this appropriately. We've done the same as we do with any other club. We remain present and the offer stands, in case Atlético decides to sell the player," Laporta said.
Barcelona regard Ălvarez as their only option to strengthen the attack this summer and will not pursue an alternative forward, according to the club's stance as relayed by Laporta.
"We maintain our proposal, our offer, and hopefully there will be an understanding between the two clubs," he concluded.
