Juventus send scouts to watch Pierre-Emile Højbjerg ahead of January

Juventus are already planning for the January transfer window and have identified Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, the Marseille captain, as a potential solution to their midfield needs.

The Italian giants are assessing options for the position after Manuel Locatelli’s injury, with Juventus looking for more than technical quality. They want an experienced midfielder capable of providing leadership and personality.

Højbjerg, 31, fits that profile. The Denmark international has previously played for Bayern Munich and Tottenham before moving to Marseille, where he has taken on the responsibility of captain.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus scouts were in Wales to watch Højbjerg during the international break.

The midfielder’s appearance was cut short after he asked to be substituted after only 10 minutes because of a muscular problem. The issue is understood to have been precautionary, although there is still considerable time before the January window opens.

Juventus have been monitoring Højbjerg for some time and could return with a concrete approach when the market reopens.

The appeal is clear for a team looking for greater experience in midfield. Juventus want a player who can dictate the tempo while also bringing the character required to influence teammates.

Højbjerg’s leadership qualities are particularly relevant to the profile Juventus are seeking. His experience in the Premier League and at Bayern, combined with his role as Marseille captain, gives him the background the club believes could strengthen the squad.

The January market remains some distance away, meaning there is no indication that a deal is close. Juventus will continue assessing their options before deciding whether Højbjerg is the right player to pursue.

His fitness will also be monitored following the muscular problem that forced him off in Wales. While the issue does not currently appear serious, Juventus will have plenty of time to evaluate his condition before the winter window.

The club’s interest nevertheless demonstrates the type of midfielder they are seeking. Rather than simply replacing an injured player, Juventus want someone capable of bringing quality, authority and experience to the centre of the team.

Højbjerg currently remains with Marseille, but the presence of Juventus representatives in Wales confirms that the Danish midfielder is being watched closely.

If his performances continue to meet the requirements of Luciano Spalletti’s team, the Marseille captain could become one of Juventus’ main targets when the January window opens.
