Juventus close in on Villa keeper Martinez as player says "yes"

Juventus have taken a significant step towards signing Emiliano Martinez after the goalkeeper's representatives confirmed his willingness to leave Aston Villa for Turin.

Talks between the two camps have intensified in recent days, with Juventus' hierarchy increasingly confident of getting a deal done.

Chief executive Giovanni Carnevali and new football chief Ricky Massara met the intermediary handling Martinez's affairs in Milan, where the Argentine world champion reiterated his desire to join Luciano Spalletti's project, even at the cost of a reduced salary and the Champions League football he has helped Villa reach in recent seasons, reports TMW.

Personal terms have already been agreed in principle, with Martinez set to sign a three-year contract worth around €5m per season plus bonuses. The remaining obstacle is a fee with Aston Villa, who have so far refused to budge much below €10m for a goalkeeper they still regard as first choice for both club and country. Juventus, for their part, would prefer to close the deal for closer to €5m and are hoping the player's own camp can help bridge the gap by leaning on their relationship with the English club.

Villa came close to losing Martinez last summer before manager Unai Emery persuaded him to stay for one more season, and there is no indication this time that the club would stand in his way if a workable offer arrives.

Juventus, who need a new number one after their existing goalkeeping options were deemed insufficient for Spalletti's project, are keen to avoid a prolonged saga and hope the growing goodwill between the parties can translate into an agreement before pre-season training gets fully under way.

Martinez, who turns 34 in September, still has a year left on his Villa contract beyond this one, meaning the English club are under no pressure to sell at a discount, even as they look to keep his valuation from dropping further. Juventus have identified Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario as their leading alternative should the Martinez deal fail to progress, but the World Cup winner remains the club's clear first choice as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping department for Spalletti's first full season in charge.
