Juventus chase Lucumí and Muharemovic as defensive overhaul shapes up in Turin

Juventus are pursuing a significant overhaul of their defensive options, with Luciano Spalletti prioritising reinforcements at the back alongside the striker and goalkeeper searches already underway.

The primary centre-back target is Jhon Lucumí of Bologna. The Colombian has a release clause of €28 million, valid until mid-July, though Juventus's current offer is around €18 million — a gap Corriere dello Sport describes as still considerable.

Bologna are holding firm, aware they are likely to lose the player this summer and determined to maximise the fee. Bournemouth are also in the picture, giving the Italian club leverage in any negotiation with Juventus.

Spalletti wants quality alongside Gleison Bremer, who confirmed his desire to remain in Turin during the World Cup. The Juventus captain is not considered a certain stay, however — nor is Federico Gatti, who has attracted interest from Napoli under Massimiliano Allegri. Joan Cabal has admirers in the Premier League.

Andrea Cambiaso is on Barcelona's radar. Only Pierre Kalulu and Lloyd Kelly appear insulated from the summer's uncertainty.

One arrival looks close to being confirmed. Tarik Muharemovic, 23, is set to return to Juventus from Sassuolo in a deal that will cost the club very little. When Juventus sold Muharemovic to Sassuolo, they retained a 50 percent sell-on clause. CEO Giovanni Carnevali — who moved from Sassuolo to Juventus this summer — knows the player well and is understood to have been instrumental in bringing him back. The financial structure makes the deal an efficient use of resources.

Carnevali is also in talks with Bologna over Fabio Miretti, though again the two clubs are apart on valuation. Bologna are asking €15 million; Juventus are seeking to bring that figure down.

The overarching principle of Juventus's summer is sell to buy. The defensive shuffle — exits for Gatti, Cabal and potentially Bremer, arrivals of Lucumí and Muharemovic — would give Spalletti a rebuilt backline capable of mounting the Champions League challenge the club missed last season after finishing sixth in Serie A.

Muharemovic spent three seasons at Sassuolo and made 29 Serie A appearances last season, scoring twice. His return closes a circle: Carnevali helped develop him at Sassuolo, and now brings him to Turin as the centrepiece of the new regime's first summer of work.
