Filip Jorgensen has revealed he decided in January that he wanted to leave Chelsea after accepting he needed regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge.

Jorgensen had already decided that his Chelsea future needed to change several months before he eventually joined Strasbourg on loan.

The Denmark international, now playing regularly in France, has explained that the lack of first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge had convinced him by January that a move was necessary.

"Ever since January, I knew I wanted to move. I wanted to play every weekend and show what I can do. It means an absolute lot. I am very happy about it," Jorgensen told Tipsbladet.

The goalkeeper joined Chelsea from Villarreal in 2024 and spent most of his time competing with Robert Sanchez rather than establishing himself as the club's first choice. His first-team opportunities remained limited despite periods when he was brought into the starting XI.

Chelsea had previously been open to discussions about his future, but Jorgensen's priority was straightforward: playing every week.

"They asked me two months before the end of the season what I wanted for next season, whether I wanted to stay or whether I wanted to leave. And I just want to play. If I could play regularly at Chelsea, I would like to stay, but if not, I would like to leave."

His eventual destination was Strasbourg, another club within the BlueCo ownership structure, where the 24-year-old has been given the regular role he wanted.

Jorgensen left Chelsea's pre-season tour early in July once the move to France was taking shape. The loan gives him an opportunity to rebuild his momentum at club level and has also helped restore his position with Denmark.

The situation at Chelsea changed again after Jorgensen's departure. Sanchez was subsequently loaned to Como, while Chelsea brought in Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa. Mike Penders, who had spent the previous campaign at Strasbourg, is now among the goalkeeping options at Stamford Bridge.

Jorgensen is not looking beyond the immediate season, despite knowing that another decision awaits him next summer.

"I'm not thinking about that right now. I just want to have a good year, and then next summer we'll see what happens."

For the moment, the move has delivered the one thing Jorgensen felt he was missing in west London: a genuine opportunity to play regularly and show what he can do. That was the condition he had set for remaining at Chelsea.
