Johan Manzambi could hardly have asked for a better introduction to life at Aston Villa.

After scoring on his Champions League debut on his 21st birthday, the Swiss midfielder followed up with the decisive goal in a 1-0 Premier League victory at Newcastle United.

Manzambi headed home João Gomes' cross in the 36th minute at St James' Park, delivering a result that continued Villa's progress under Unai Emery and left Newcastle frustrated on home soil.

“I’m very happy to score today,” Manzambi said after the match. “I hope next time we can both score, but the most important thing is the three points.”

The goal was another sign of his growing influence since moving to Villa Park during the summer. His timing and movement in the penalty area made the difference against Newcastle, who had also pursued him before Villa secured his signature.

Manzambi was joined after the final whistle by Nicolas Jackson, who was named Man of the Match. The midfielder was quick to emphasise the collective effort rather than focus on his own run of form.

His first weeks at Villa have included European football, a birthday goal and now a decisive contribution in a demanding away fixture. The results have helped justify his decision to join Emery's side, where he believes the environment suits his ambitions.

“The team is very good,” he said. “I played against this team in the final (Europa League) and I knew about this team. It’s a very good team with a big coach, and it’s perfect for me.”

Villa's victory was built on defensive organisation as well as Manzambi's first-half finish. Newcastle applied pressure after the break, but Emery's players kept their shape and protected their advantage to secure three points.

For Manzambi, the week offered an early indication of what he can contribute in both domestic and European competition. His goals have arrived on significant occasions, but his response after the Newcastle match reflected a player focused on the team's progress.

The midfielder's message was simple: the individual moment mattered, but the result mattered more. Villa will hope his early momentum continues as the fixtures come quickly and the demands of their new campaign increase.
