How Athletico Paranaense's Arthur Dias went from striker to Brazil capped defender

Arthur Dias was found crying alone after training following a costly Athletico Paranaense debut, yet 14 months later the 19-year-old centre-back is starting for Brazil.

The mistake came in July last year, in a 2-2 Série B draw at América Mineiro: a second-half substitute appearance, a conceded penalty, and a point dropped. What happened afterwards is the part Odair Hellmann remembers.

"There was an episode where Arthur sat in a corner after training, alone, crying," the Athletico coach said in an interview in May. His response, as he described it, was to make sure the teenager knew where he stood.

"Nobody here is going to treat you as a criminal, as the worst player in the world, as guilty of anything."

Hellmann added: "You're a promising player, a player of this club, and we're going to treat you with respect, we're going to embrace you. But you have to know you made a mistake. It's part of it. It's about correcting it from here on."

Dias corrected it quickly. By August last year he was a first-choice centre-back, by September he had a new contract to December 2028, and this year he has played 26 Série A games and scored his first senior goal, in the derby against Coritiba. In September, Carlo Ancelotti's first squad list of the new Brazil cycle carried his name.

He took the news at home in Curitiba, in front of his family.

"I'm not much of a crier, but at that moment a film plays in your head, being able to represent our country," he said after hearing the news. "The moment I saw my name there, I was very happy, very joyful, very content, and I couldn't hold back the tears."

He had been through harder moments. Born in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Dias started out as a striker and played futsal, and he arrived at Athletico in 2022 at 15 still as a forward. It almost ended there. Rodrigo Bellão, the former Athletico coach who worked with him in the youth ranks, told UmDois Esportes in January last year that the club nearly let him go.

"Everybody wanted to send him away and thought it was madness," Bellão said. "I ended up not releasing him because I saw potential as a centre-back. Arthur was a better marker than a striker."

Bellão moved him to the wing, then to full-back, and finally to centre-back, a final switch that, by Bellão's account, had Dias asking to leave.

"In the beginning it was a bit hard for me, because I had always been a striker," Dias said in March, crediting both Bellão and Hellmann for the chance.

The near-miss was not the only one. Internacional, reports say, tried to sign him from Porto Alegre while he was still a striker and unsure of his Athletico future, offering a contract and housing for him and his parents. He chose to stay in Curitiba and try again.

Ancelotti noticed what the club saw.

"I really liked Arthur Dias, whom I didn't know," the Brazil coach told reporters last month in Brisbane, a day before the 19-year-old made his debut as a late substitute in the 4-2 win over Australia.

"It was a feeling of great joy to make my debut in the Brazil shirt," Dias said afterwards. "It was a boy's dream, and not even in my best dreams did I imagine being able to debut."

Four days later he started. Dias partnered Marquinhos in the first half of the 4-0 win over India in Kolkata this month, moved to left-back after the break and was replaced just under an hour in. He completed 56 of 59 passes, including six long balls, more than any other Brazil player, and was not dribbled past.

"Arthur Dias did well, and so did the goalkeepers," Ancelotti said after the match.

On the pitch, he is a left-footed centre-back of around 1.88 metres, most comfortable on the left of the defence and, as India showed, usable at left-back too.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly tested Athletico with an offer of around €21 million for 80% of his economic rights, which was rejected, and Athletico are said to want closer to €30 million. Barcelona's scouting department, led by Deco, is watching him regularly and Flamengo are interested too.

His agent, Eduardo Maluf, has seen the whole path.

"Arthur has been my client for five years, a golden boy, he fought hard and works hard for this moment," Maluf said. "Only those who are close to him and live with him and his family know the struggle they all went through to reach this step."

Dias has a message for the next group.

"Never give up on your dream, keep working and dedicating yourself every day," he told young players from Mato Grosso do Sul. It is advice from someone who very nearly did.
