Hoeness tells Laimer he is 'not Maradona' as Bayern Munich contract talks stall

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß has publicly intervened in the stalled contract negotiations with right-back Konrad Laimer, telling DAZN that the Austria international must accept the limits of his market value.

Laimer, 29, arrived at Bayern as a free agent from RB Leipzig in 2023 and his current deal runs until 2027. Talks over an extension have reached a standstill, with reports in Germany claiming the player is seeking in the region of €12-15 million per year gross — a figure the club has refused to entertain. Hoeneß was characteristically direct on the matter.

"Konny is a player I value very highly. He is extremely important for the team and also for the club's public image. He works incredibly hard for the team. But he is not Maradona. And players like that have to accept that there are limits — even when they earn very good money."

He stressed there was no animosity between the parties.

"There is no bad blood, no resentment — just two different viewpoints."

Because Laimer originally arrived on a free transfer, allowing his contract to expire in 2027 without an extension would not constitute a significant financial loss for the club, Hoeneß noted. Sporting director Max Eberl's existing offer, which Hoeneß acknowledged he does not know in precise detail, represents, in his words, "a realistic assessment of his sporting and economic value — high, but he is not Harry Kane."

The comments landed with additional weight given what followed. When asked to name his dream signing, Hoeneß looked no further than the right-back position currently occupied by Laimer.

"Achraf Hakimi — we would take him immediately because he would fit well with us."

The Paris Saint-Germain defender, 27, is set to miss Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg at the Allianz Arena through injury, which will spare Hoeneß the displeasure of watching the player he covets lining up against his own club. Bayern are understood to be monitoring 19-year-old Feyenoord right-back Givairo Read as a longer-term option in the position.
