Oscar Hiljemark has said he hopes to remain as Pisa coach despite Sestaporta reporting that the club has decided to dismiss him at the end of the season, following a run of results that failed to prevent relegation from Serie A.

The 33-year-old Swede arrived in February from Swedish club IF Elfsborg, replacing Alberto Gilardino who had managed just one win in 23 Serie A rounds. Hiljemark fared little better, taking four points from 15 matches β€” one win, one draw and 13 defeats β€” in a tenure that could not arrest the club's downward slide.

Pisa were already deep in relegation trouble when Hiljemark arrived, and the task of turning around a squad that had been bottom of the table for much of the season proved beyond him. The club will play in Serie B next season regardless of his status.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia after the penultimate fixture of the campaign β€” defeat at Lazio β€” Hiljemark kept the door open to continuing.

"We started very well today. We could have made it 2-0. Then the equaliser came and the match changed. Today's performance is okay, but it is a scene we have seen so many times this season."

He was direct about his own hopes.

"I am thinking about staying here, but if you want certainty you have to speak with the sporting director. Tonight I am thinking about the match, about the players who will be going to their national teams and those who will stay here."

Hiljemark is a familiar face in Italian football, having played for Palermo and Genoa between 2015 and 2019, and he cited his earlier experience of Serie A as part of his pitch when he was appointed. The contract he signed upon joining runs until June 2027 with an option.

The decision now rests with the club. Whether they exercise that option or move on is the question Hiljemark is waiting to have answered.
