The 30-year-old Guinea international made the decision after internal discussions about his role in Niko Kovač's system, according to Sky Sport Germany. Despite having a contract running until 2028, the striker has told the club he is ready for a new challenge.
Guirassy joined Borussia Dortmund from VfB Stuttgart in the summer of 2024 for €18 million and has been one of the Bundesliga's most productive forwards since, scoring 59 goals and providing 15 assists in 95 appearances across two seasons. This season he found the net 16 times in the league and four times in the Champions League, as Dortmund finished second and qualified for next season's Champions League before their European run ended against Atalanta, who recovered from 2-0 down in the first leg to win 4-3 on aggregate.
The €50 million release clause can only be triggered by a small number of clubs — understood to include Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal. None of those clubs has made a formal approach to Dortmund or the player at this stage.
AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur and Fenerbahçe have also been linked, though those clubs would need to negotiate directly with Dortmund rather than activate any clause.
The club is determined to keep him. Sporting directors Ole Booker and Lars Ricken are expected to make every effort to convince Guirassy to stay, though they acknowledge that finding a replacement of his calibre would be a significant challenge.
