Matthias Ginter has extended his contract with Freiburg after agreeing a new deal to continue his long association with the Bundesliga club.

The 32-year-old centre-back has signed fresh terms with SC Freiburg, although the club have not disclosed the length of the agreement.

Ginter returned to his boyhood club from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2022 and has since established himself as a key figure in the side. He has now made 255 appearances for Freiburg across two spells.

The defender was delighted to commit his future to the club and believes there is more success to come.

“We want to continue writing this shared success story and are maximally ambitious,” Ginter said.

Freiburg have enjoyed a period of sustained progress in recent seasons, with Ginter playing a central role in the team’s development since returning to the club.

Chief executive Jochen Saier was equally pleased that the experienced defender had chosen to remain in the Black Forest.

“The level and consistency of his performances are impressive and have shaped the overall sporting development of the team,” Saier said.

“Matze is still extremely ambitious after all these years in professional football.”

Ginter has also represented Germany at international level and brings extensive experience to a Freiburg squad that has continued to compete for European qualification.

His decision to extend his stay provides Freiburg with continuity at the heart of their defence and ensures one of the club’s most experienced players remains available for the next stage of their development.

For Ginter, the new contract represents another commitment to the club where his senior career began and where he has become an important leader.

The agreement also allows Freiburg to retain a defender whose performances and experience have made him an influential figure both on the pitch and within the dressing room.

With both player and club expressing ambitions for further success, Ginter’s stay will continue beyond his 32nd birthday.
