George Boateng exclusive: Aston Villa and Emery have built something real

Drag There are certain former Premier League players whose opinions carry weight because they have lived every side of the game. George Boateng is one of them.

Across an outstanding career with clubs including Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Hull City, Boateng built his reputation on leadership, intelligence and consistency. Since retiring, he has moved into coaching, working across Europe, Asia and international football.

But as Aston Villa prepare for the biggest European night in the club’s modern history, Boateng’s attention is firmly on one of his former clubs.

Villa’s run to the 2026 UEFA Europa League Final has captured the imagination of supporters across Europe. After overturning their semi-final deficit in dramatic fashion to eliminate Nottingham Forest, Unai Emery’s side now head into the final believing they can bring major European silverware back to Villa Park.

And Boateng believes their rise has been built on much more than momentum.

“Aston Villa are in a very strong position right now,” Boateng told Football Presse. “What I like most is that this hasn’t happened by accident. You can see the structure, you can see the planning, and you can see the belief in the group.”

For Boateng, Villa’s biggest strength is identity.

“In modern football, when a club has a clear identity, a strong manager and stability behind the scenes, progress becomes possible. That’s what I see at Villa now.”

Having played for the club himself, Boateng knows what Villa Park can be like when the team and supporters are moving in the same direction.

“They have one of the biggest fanbases in England, a fantastic stadium and huge expectations. But now they also have consistency, and that’s the difference.”

Boateng reserved special praise for Emery, whose experience in European competition has once again been evident throughout Villa’s run.

“Unai Emery has done a fantastic job,” Boateng continued. “He knows how to organise teams, improve players and create a winning mentality. Those things are not easy to do, especially when expectations rise.”

Among the current squad, one player has stood out above all for the former midfielder.

“If I mention one player, it’s Ezri Konsa. He has improved enormously — not just as a defender, but as a leader.”

Boateng believes defenders like Konsa often go underappreciated in modern football.

“Sometimes people only notice goals and assists. But players who defend properly, organise the team and stay consistent are priceless.”

He is equally impressed by Villa’s core leaders in midfield and attack. Youri Tielemans brings intelligence and calmness, while John McGinn provides personality and relentless energy.

And up front, Boateng believes Ollie Watkins remains one of the league’s elite forwards.

“He’s one of the best strikers in the Premier League. His movement, timing and understanding of space are excellent. Young forwards should study him.”

Boateng is also excited by the development of Morgan Rogers.

“He’s still developing, and that’s exciting because there’s more to come. He works quietly, professionally, and lets his football do the talking.”

But with a European final now just days away, Boateng believes Villa have reached the stage where admiration means nothing without silverware.

“They’ve done brilliantly to get there, but finals are about winning,” he told Football Presse. “That’s how teams become remembered. Villa have built something real — now they have to finish the job.”

Coming from George Boateng, that sounds less like pressure — and more like belief.
