The 27-year-old Liverpool winger spoke to ESPN ahead of the squad's first competitive preparations, drawing a deliberate line under a turbulent club season that ended with Arne Slot's dismissal.
"We have to leave that behind and move forward here with where we want to go. I think it helps to be in a different environment and that you can also work towards something again."
Gakpo was candid about how the news of Slot's departure had landed within the Liverpool playing group.
"A shame that the manager was sacked. None of the players saw it coming. But it is what it is. Many players are working towards the World Cup, so they also have to put it aside quickly."
He did reach out to Slot personally after hearing the news.
"I sent him a message. To thank him for the past two years, with last season of course as the highlight. Those are beautiful memories."
On the Netherlands' realistic ambitions, Gakpo was unequivocal.
"We as a group believe very strongly that we can win it. You have to have confidence and belief in what you do. This group has that. The chance of the world title is therefore real โ otherwise there is no point in entering."
The personal context adds an extra dimension. Gakpo is expecting his second child during the tournament โ the same situation he found himself in ahead of the 2024 European Championship, where he had an outstanding individual tournament.
"Thankfully, it is a gift from God โ very happy with it. It gives extra courage. The previous time we also planned it this way. These are special moments in a career. Extra energy is released in everyone, in me too."
