Jesus has found opportunities limited since his move to Camp Nou, largely a consequence of needing time to adapt to a new team but also because of the outstanding form shown by Barcelona's attacking options, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal chief among them.
The former Leeds United forward is nonetheless Hansi Flick's undisputed starter through the middle, with the coach turning to him as a false nine following injuries to Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres during the transfer window, and his contributions so far have been striking: eight goals and three assists in six appearances, five in LaLiga and one in the Champions League.
Raphinha's excellent form, combined with the offensive productivity of Lamine, Fermín and Karim Adeyemi, has meant Jesus has not featured as heavily as he might have hoped.
"Rapha is scoring goals. He plays every game, he deserves it," Jesus said in an interview with TV3's "Tot Costa" programme. "I'm going to try to compete and wait for my chance to play more and get more minutes."
Jesus has featured in just two matches so far this season, playing seven minutes against Feyenoord and two against Valencia, but he has already opened his goalscoring account, netting in the Champions League. The former Arsenal player scored the fifth goal in a 5-1 win over Feyenoord.
"I want to score goals and help, and I don't want to do it when it's 2-0, 3-0 or 4-0, I want to score important goals," added Jesus, who signed with Barcelona until June 2029.
The 29-year-old's patience reflects the depth Flick now has to call upon in attack, a stark contrast to the situation Barcelona faced before the transfer window closed, when injuries to Lewandowski and Torres left the club light on recognised strikers. Jesus arrived to provide cover in that position, and while his opportunities have been limited by his new teammates' form, his early impact in Europe suggests he will be ready when a more prominent role arrives.
Jesus joined Barcelona from Arsenal for around €10 million plus variables, having spent four seasons at the Emirates Stadium after arriving from Manchester City in 2022. His experience competing for places in stacked attacking lines, first under Pep Guardiola and later at Arsenal, appears to be shaping his approach to a similar challenge in Catalonia.
