Fulham weigh up Thomas Frank as Arbeloa faces pressure

Fulham are reportedly considering Thomas Frank as a potential replacement for Álvaro Arbeloa, whose winless start has left him under pressure after Saturday’s late defeat at Ipswich.

Fulham have failed to win any of their opening six Premier League matches under Arbeloa and sit bottom of the table after surrendering a lead in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town.

The Cottagers appeared on course for their first league victory under the Spaniard when Ryan Sessegnon put them ahead. Abdoul Ouattara equalised late on before Dara O’Shea headed home a stoppage-time winner, extending Fulham’s difficult start.

Reports suggest Arbeloa has two matches to improve the situation, with Fulham due to face Hull City at home before travelling to Coventry City. The club are reportedly prepared to reconsider his position if results do not improve.

Arbeloa, who took charge after Marco Silva left for Benfica in the summer, has insisted he is not concerned about his own job.

“I never worry about my position. I don’t feel fear. You cannot be a coach if you feel it,” he said.

“You have to work, take the decision, and you need to show confidence to your players.”

The former Real Madrid and Liverpool defender added that he was pleased with aspects of his players’ performances but recognised the need to collect points.

“It’s not about my position, it is about Fulham’s position. That is the most important thing. Obviously it is just six games, but it is true we need points.”

Fulham’s only victories this season have come in the Carabao Cup, against AFC Wimbledon and West Ham. Their league form has intensified scrutiny of Arbeloa’s decisions, particularly after late goals have cost his side on several occasions.

Frank is reportedly under consideration as a replacement. The Dane has been out of work since leaving Tottenham and previously enjoyed a successful seven-year spell at Brentford, guiding the club into the Premier League in 2021 and establishing them in the top flight.

Former Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna is also said to be on Fulham’s radar. He was considered for the job before the club appointed Arbeloa.

For now, Arbeloa remains in charge, but the upcoming matches against Hull and Coventry could prove decisive. Another failure to turn performances into results would leave Fulham’s hierarchy facing an increasingly difficult decision over the manager’s future.
