The 27-year-old left-back quickly became part of Manuel Pellegrini's plans after making the move to Seville, but the decision followed a late change in circumstances.
García revealed that his transfer happened extremely quickly after a late-night phone call.
“There had been options discussed, but nothing was ever finalised beyond what we had actually talked about. Then there was a phone call, I don't know if it was at ten-thirty or eleven at night, saying that I had to come here the next day. It was all very quick.”
The defender said he packed his belongings the following morning before joining Betis' squad in Germany.
García also explained that the arrival of Marc Cucurella, alongside the previous signing of Álvaro Carreras, made his position at Real Madrid more difficult.
“The situation was complicated because I knew the kind of role I had had over the years, even though I had ended up playing almost every season I was there.”
“But I understand that in the end another signing comes in for €60 million after Álvaro Carreras, who cost €50m. I understand that priority is going to be given to a young player from the academy, because that is a bit of the policy that has been shown over the years.”
García ultimately asked Real Madrid for permission to explore a move.
“I’m a player who likes to compete, I like to enjoy this beautiful thing that is football and everything that comes with it. I asked the club if they would give me the option to leave and we started looking at options. One of them was Betis and in the end it happened.”
