Contract talks between Nottingham Forest and head coach Vitor Pereira have been paused until the new season begins, it has emerged.

The Portuguese made a significant impact at the City Ground after becoming the club's fourth head coach of the 2025-26 campaign in February.

He steered Forest to Premier League safety with two games to spare and guided them to the semi-finals of the Europa League in his first months in charge.

Discussions about a new deal had taken place toward the end of last season, with Pereira having 12 months remaining on his current contract.

The manager said last month that reaching an agreement on an extension would not be difficult.

According to the BBC, talks have now been put on hold for the time being, with the feeling inside the club that now is not the right time to continue negotiations.

Pereira and Nottingham Forest remain committed to each other for the future, the report adds, with the 57-year-old keen to extend his stay while the club remain interested in renewing his deal.

The intention is to restart discussions once the 2026-27 season is under way.

Pereira was recently linked with a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, speculation that emerged despite his recent comments about his commitment to Forest.

Speaking after his side's 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on the final day of the season, Pereira had indicated he expected to meet with the club's hierarchy after a short break.

"I will have a meeting. They want that I stay, I want to stay. It's not difficult to find an agreement."

Prior to that, Pereira had confirmed that discussions had already taken place regarding a new deal.

"Yes, of course. If not, it is impossible to start speaking about pre-season, about the future, about the players."

He added that finalising terms was not his immediate priority, with alignment across the club seen as more important at this stage.

"About the contract, we'll do it, for sure. But I'm not worried about it because the most important thing is to start to align everything and to discuss everything; to know we are on the same page."

Forest's hierarchy are understood to share Pereira's desire for continuity, with the pause in talks viewed as a procedural delay rather than any sign of a breakdown in the relationship between the two parties heading into next season.

Pereira's achievements since taking over in February have strengthened his standing among supporters, with both the survival bid and the run to the Europa League semi-finals exceeding expectations given the upheaval that preceded his appointment.

The club's willingness to wait until pre-season to formalise a new contract suggests confidence on both sides that an agreement will eventually be reached, even with interest from elsewhere continuing to surface around the head coach.
