Speaking ahead of Wednesday's LaLiga meeting with Racing Santander, Flick was asked about Yamal's recent comments suggesting he felt he deserved the award over Kylian Mbappé. The head coach stopped short of comparing the two players directly but made clear where his loyalties lie.
"It's not easy to answer this, I can only talk about Lamine, not about Mbappé," Flick said. "Lamine is honest and shows on the pitch how good he is. He says it, he has that confidence... I would have preferred it hadn't been this way, but he's being honest, and I will support him."
Pressed further on the topic, Flick added: "Why not campaign for Lamine? He's our player and I support the players who have that confidence. I think it's fine. I support our players."
Flick said he hoped the Ballon d'Or discussion would not become a distraction as Barcelona look to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
"I hope it doesn't throw them off course. You win titles when it's time to win them. We have to focus on the present, it's in our hands to work hard and the results will come," he said. "Whether you win the Ballon d'Or or another title... what matters to me is the collective."
The head coach also addressed the news that Barcelona's Spotify Camp Nou will host the 2029 Champions League final, calling it a source of pride for the club, though he was coy on whether he would still be in charge by then.
"It's our dream to win it before that. It's good news to host the final, it will be incredible," Flick said, before adding on his own future: "I'll be here 100 per cent, I don't know if as coach. We'll see. It's not known. I'm enjoying it, but you don't know what will happen."
On the disruption caused by the international break, Flick was resigned rather than enthusiastic.
"There are things I can't change. September, October and November... there's a packed calendar after the World Cup. It's not ideal, but we have to support the national teams," he said.
Turning to team news, Flick gave an update on Gavi's situation after his return from injury, stressing the midfielder remains central to his plans despite limited minutes.
"All the players are important to us, and we need all of them. Gavi has great ambition and always wants to play... he played, got injured, has come back... but the team is working as it is and that has to be accepted," Flick said.
He struck a similar tone on Alejandro Balde's situation amid growing competition at left-back, praising the form of young full-back Xavi Espart while insisting the situation "isn't easy" to manage. On Racing themselves, Flick warned his side to expect a difficult test.
"We're playing a great rival, who come out with courage, attack in behind, into space... we have to be focused," he said.
