A fake tweet claiming Paul Pogba was set to join Fortuna Sittard was picked up by two major Portuguese newspapers, capping an unlikely week for the Dutch club.

The X account @dannyboesoe impersonated journalist Fabrizio Romano and posted that the free agent Pogba would sign for the Eredivisie side, a joke that went on to be viewed more than four million times after outlets including O Jogo and Record ran with the claim. Fortuna coach Danny Buijs was informed of the story and took it in good humour.

"If I have his number, I could send him a message," he said.

The hoax capped a bizarre week of media attention for the Limburg club that began with the surprise global popularity of their new away shirt.

The burgundy kit pays tribute to Saint Rose of Lima, who has been Sittard's patron saint since 1669 after residents prayed to her during a dysentery and plague outbreak, and who is also the patron saint of Peru, where she was born in 1586.

The shirt, designed by 24-year-old Sittard native Jelmar Gorissen and featuring a rose motif along with lettering inspired by the Sint Rosakapel chapel in the city, has found unexpected demand in Peru, with orders also arriving from the UK, Sweden, the United States and Australia.

Peruvian media and influencers have shared images of the kit online, with videos racking up hundreds of thousands of views, and even the Peruvian parish of Santa Rosa de Lima sharing a picture of the shirt.

Pogba, 33, has been without a club since his contract with Monaco was terminated, and remains one of the higher-profile free agents still available heading into the closing stages of the European transfer window, though nothing beyond the hoax tweet has linked him to a move to the Netherlands.
