Diomandé and Vinicius Jr are set to line up together this season under José Mourinho, with the Ivorian one of Real Madrid's marquee summer signings and the Brazilian having recently signed a new contract to resolve any doubts over his own future.
The two are capable of operating on either flank, and Borja Jiménez, who gave Diomandé his professional debut at Leganés, spoke to OKDiario about the qualities that make his former player so adaptable.
"He can use both feet and can play on either side. I think he adapts really well to both spots.
"Within that ease he has for beating a man, he can do it from the left by cutting inside to shoot, just as he can from the right, which he's done for almost the whole year at Leipzig.
"One of his strengths is that ease of playing on either flank without there being much of a noticeable difference," he said.
Asked whether Vinícius and Diomandé are compatible on the pitch, Jiménez was unequivocal.
"Yes, they're compatible. It's not for me to say where he should play at Real Madrid. But yes. He's not going to have any problem playing on the right, especially because he's done it all year and at the World Cup. If anything, in the last 16 months, since he's been a professional, the position he's played least is on the left."
Diomandé's fee is reported to be in the region of €115m-€120m, making him the latest addition to a Madrid attack rebuilt around Mourinho's arrival, following the signings of Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konaté and Bernardo Silva earlier in the window.
Statistically, Diomandé's game differs from Vinícius's in key respects: while the Brazilian is known for his composure and combination play, the Ivorian's defining trait is his directness and vertical impact, characteristics that stood out during his rapid rise from Leganés' reserves to a starting role for Ivory Coast at this summer's World Cup.
