JJ Gabriel's push to leave Manchester United has sparked a scramble among Europe's elite clubs, with Real Madrid rejoining the race for the 15-year-old wonderkid as Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain also circle.
The teenager, widely regarded as the most exciting prospect to emerge from United's academy since Ryan Giggs, formally requested the cancellation of his registration this week in a move that has stunned the Carrington hierarchy.
Gabriel was in line to make his competitive debut against Brighton in the Carabao Cup and potentially become the club's youngest-ever player, but has now been dropped from consideration.
Real Madrid have scouted Gabriel extensively and are positioning themselves as a leading contender, according to The Sun. Barcelona have also pursued the player for years, while Bayern Munich and PSG have maintained long-standing interest. Manchester City and Arsenal are monitoring the situation domestically, though City are understood to be pessimistic about their chances.
A major factor behind Gabriel's request is understood to be his limited first-team exposure. He played just 13 minutes in pre-season, including five minutes of stoppage time against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, and was not included in United's Champions League A-list squad.
His father, Joe O'Cearuill, a former Arsenal youth player who won two Republic of Ireland caps, is believed to have played a significant role in the decision.
The family's preference for Spain as a destination is well-documented, and Gabriel's Irish passport — his father represented Ireland and his mother has Cypriot heritage — means he could join a European club as soon as he turns 16 on 6 October. Under post-Brexit rules, English players must normally be 18 to move abroad unless they hold dual nationality with an EU country.
