The father of Real Madrid loanee Endrick has delivered a pointed assessment of his son's time at the club, saying the Spanish giants took away the teenager's love of the game — and that Olympique Lyon has restored it.

Douglas Sousa spoke to ESPN Brasil ahead of Brazil's World Cup squad announcement, with Endrick's place in Carlo Ancelotti's plans closely watched following a breakthrough spell in Ligue 1.

"Endrick has a saying: his football field is his amusement park. What he wanted was to play football. In a way, they took that playground away from him. And he has found that happiness at Lyon. He is happy, and that is the most important thing for us," Sousa said.

Endrick made just four first-team appearances for Real Madrid before the loan to Lyon was sanctioned in January. He has since scored seven goals and contributed six assists in 17 matches, including a goal and an assist against PSG.

Sousa also expressed confidence in his son's World Cup prospects.

"Expectations are high, and if he continues this dynamic, he can clearly aim for selection," he said.

Whether Endrick returns to Madrid beyond the summer or extends his loan at Lyon remains undecided. He himself told L'Équipe: "Only God knows what will happen, whether he'll tell me to stay here or not."
