Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson for a fee of around £48 million — €45 million fixed with €3 million in easily achievable bonuses — ending a two-year pursuit of the Brazil international.

Tuttomercatoweb and Sky Sports both reported the agreement is in its final stages, with formal confirmation expected within days. ESPN confirmed Manchester United are ready to pay around £45 million as a guaranteed fee, with add-ons bringing the total into the £48 million range.

The 26-year-old will become the first confirmed arrival of United's summer rebuild under manager Michael Carrick.

Ederson joined Atalanta from Salernitana in the summer of 2022 for €22.9 million and leaves after four seasons at the Gewiss Stadium having been integral to one of the most decorated periods in the Bergamo club's recent history.

His 180 appearances for Atalanta included the Europa League triumph in 2024 — the club's first major European title — and a Champions League quarter-final campaign this season. He contributed 41 appearances and three goals in all competitions this season.

The deal gives Atalanta a profit of more than €22 million on a player they signed relatively modestly and developed into a full Brazil international capable of attracting sustained interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs. Atletico Madrid had been frontrunners for much of the past 12 months before pivoting to Wolves midfielder João Gomes, opening the door for United.

Ederson under Maurizio Sarri operated as a disciplined holder capable of driving forward when space allowed — a profile Carrick identified as complementary to Bruno Fernandes and the midfield he is building. The Brazilian is expected to be one of at least two midfield signings United make this summer, with West Ham's Mateus Fernandes also a target.
