Canada have created World Cup fever on home soil, and 20-year-old Luc de Fougerolles has been one of the driving forces behind it.

The host nation can already look back on a historic tournament, with Canada through to the last 16 against Morocco.

De Fougerolles, despite his youth, has impressed on the biggest stage of his career so far.

The Fulham defender is more used to youth-team football at his club, having played for their Under-21 side.

This season he gained senior experience during a loan spell at Belgian club Dender, an experience he has described as "getting hairs on his chest."

Despite his standout performances at the World Cup, de Fougerolles insists he is not thinking about his club future.

"There's so much going on, and it's happening so quickly. So it's pretty easy to forget about club football right now, and that's also what I've done," he said, according to Reuters.

"I'm sure that when the World Cup is over, we'll see what happens," de Fougerolles added.

De Fougerolles is contracted to Fulham until the summer of 2029.

He has made just one senior appearance for the club's first team, coming in the Carabao Cup.

His rise to prominence with Canada stands in stark contrast to his lack of regular first-team football in England, underlining how quickly his stock has risen during the tournament.

Head coach Jesse Marsch has trusted the young defender with a regular starting role throughout the tournament, viewing him as one of Canada's most reliable performers under pressure.

De Fougerolles now prepares for the biggest test of his career yet, as Canada look to continue their historic run against Morocco.
