Carvajal had completed his medical and appeared set to join Getafe, but the transfer has now entered a period of uncertainty because of the league’s economic controls.
The agreement between Carvajal and Getafe is understood to be complete, with the problem centred on the salary included in the proposed contract.
La Liga is reportedly unwilling to accept the low wage Carvajal would receive, believing it does not reflect the defender’s status, career and market value after his previous salary at Real Madrid.
As a result, La Liga’s Economic Control Committee has applied its own valuation to the player for the purposes of Getafe’s salary limit.
That figure is considerably higher than the amount the club would actually pay, creating an issue with their financial calculations and preventing the deal from being registered in its current form.
Getafe president Ángel Torres has urged caution and admitted the situation is now difficult.
“I told you yesterday and this morning. Nothing is activated. It has nothing to do with La Liga. In principle, it has fallen through,” Torres said.
“In football, what is white today can be black tomorrow, but we’ll see.”
Despite those comments, the proposed transfer has not been completely abandoned. Getafe still hope to find a formula that will allow them to register Carvajal without breaching La Liga’s financial regulations.
The next stage is expected on Monday, when Carvajal’s representative returns to Spain.
The agent, Getafe’s sporting department and La Liga are then expected to resume discussions, either in person or remotely, in an attempt to resolve the issue.
For now, the deal remains on hold rather than definitively cancelled, leaving Getafe waiting for a solution to the financial obstacle that emerged after Carvajal completed his medical.
The former Real Madrid captain therefore faces an unexpected wait before he can complete his move, despite the agreement with Getafe already being in place.v
