Crystal Palace have appealed against Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card in their defeat by Tottenham, hoping to avoid a three-match suspension for the striker.

The France international was sent off after only 13 minutes of Saturday’s match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with referee Michael Oliver upgrading his initial yellow card following a VAR review.

Mateta was penalised for a challenge on Micky van de Ven as the pair contested a loose ball. The striker caught the Tottenham defender on the ankle, and Oliver changed his decision to a straight red after being asked to review the incident at the pitchside monitor.

Palace believe the contact was accidental and are arguing that Mateta was focused on the ball and did not see Van de Ven as he made the challenge.

The 29-year-old is understood to share that view, believing he had no intention of catching the defender.

The dismissal left Palace with 10 men for most of the contest and they went on to lose 2-0. Archie Gray headed Tottenham in front in the first half before Jan Paul van Hecke added a second after the break.

Palace are now seeking to have the disciplinary decision overturned or, failing that, the resulting suspension reduced. Mateta currently faces a three-match domestic ban, which would rule him out of the weekend meeting with Liverpool and subsequent league fixtures against Coventry City and Hull City.

His potential absence would be a further setback for manager Pierre Sage, who has only recently welcomed the striker back into the squad following a hamstring injury.

Mateta has been an important attacking option for Palace, and the club will be keen to have him available as they attempt to improve their league position.

The appeal offers Palace the opportunity to challenge the referee’s decision, although the outcome will determine whether Mateta is available for the Liverpool match at Selhurst Park.
