Borussia Dortmund forward Mathis Albert is set to be given the chance to prove himself with the first team during pre-season, according to a report by the Ruhr Nachrichten.

The 17-year-old will reportedly travel with the senior squad on their upcoming trip to Japan, with a decision on his longer-term involvement with the Bundesliga side to follow afterwards.

Albert made his debut under head coach Niko Kovac last season, though the vast majority of his game time came with Dortmund's U19 side and reserve team.

The club are said to be planning for the future around the American U17 international, viewing him as a genuine long-term prospect within their attacking ranks.

Elsewhere at the Westfalenstadion, Dortmund appear increasingly likely to retain the services of right-back Yan Couto for the coming season after all.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, a proposed move for the Brazilian to Serie A side Como 1907 is growing less likely by the day.

Como's interest in Couto is reported to have cooled significantly in recent hours, with the Italian club instead beginning to explore alternative options at right-back.

Negotiations between the two clubs are said to have proven complicated, and no agreement was ultimately reached to take the deal further.

Borussia Dortmund had also reportedly been reconsidering their own stance on Couto's future, having previously been open to letting him leave on loan for the season.

The 24-year-old remains under contract at Signal Iduna Park until 2030, giving the club no pressure to sell if a suitable agreement cannot be found elsewhere.

As things stand, the loan to Como that had seemed close to completion now appears set to collapse, leaving Couto's immediate future at Dortmund looking considerably more secure than it did only a few days ago.

The Brazilian struggled for regular game time last season after Julian Ryerson established himself as Dortmund's first-choice right-back, and reports in Italy had previously suggested Como were prepared to cover his wages in full for the year.

That scenario now appears to be fading, and Couto could yet find himself competing for a place in Kovac's squad when pre-season begins, rather than starting a new chapter in Serie A as had once seemed likely.
