Thibaut Courtois has categorically ruled out a return to Belgian club football and reaffirmed his determination to finish his playing career at Real Madrid, cutting off any suggestion that a late-career homecoming could be on the cards.

Speaking to reporters from Belgium's World Cup base in Seattle, the Real Madrid goalkeeper was unequivocal on his club future.

"I'm not thinking about playing in Belgium again," Courtois said. "For me, the Pro League is a closed chapter. Genk also has a lot of good young goalkeepers. My objective is to end my career at Real Madrid."

The 34-year-old's comments came as speculation around a potential return to his homeland had begun to gather momentum, with sections of the Belgian press framing it as a possible late-career option.

Courtois also addressed the uncertainty around his international future with Belgium, indicating that retirement from the national team after this tournament is the more likely outcome.

"I don't know if we should be talking about the future right now, but the chances are greater that I won't continue after this tournament than that I will," he said. "I still want to play for a few more years. To do that, I need to take care of my body."

On the subject of media scrutiny, Courtois did not hold back, directing particular frustration at reporting in Spain.

"I often read things in Spain that are invented. Things that are not true. And then it turns out they are true a month later, but who takes responsibility? There is freedom of expression, but often false things are written. Maybe 80 per cent is false. That damages players."

At club level, Courtois has played under JosΓ© Mourinho previously at Chelsea and spoke positively about his return to the BernabΓ©u. He acknowledged that contracts at Madrid operate on a rolling annual basis once a player turns 30 and said he is not concerned by the uncertainty.

"If my performance is good, the contract will be renewed," he said. "But Real Madrid is a top-level club β€” they will have to find a replacement for me eventually."
