Leganés have opened serious talks over Morata, with Sky Sport Italia and Gianluca Di Marzio reporting genuine contacts between the Segunda División club and Como over a deal for the 33-year-old.
The Spain captain, who lifted Euro 2024 with his country, has struggled to nail down a regular role under Cesc Fàbregas since arriving on loan from Milan last year, in a deal that included a mandatory €9m buy option running his contract to 2029 — terms that leave Leganés unable to cover his wages without Como's help.
The Madrid club's sporting department is negotiating directly with Como for a formula that would see the Italian side subsidise part of his salary, given his existing terms sit far outside what a Segunda División squad could normally sustain.
Morata's own willingness to return to Spanish football is understood to be the deal's biggest asset: Leganés believe landing a player with his résumé — Real Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea, Atlético Madrid and Milan among his former clubs — would be one of the standout signings anywhere in the second tier this summer, even if the club remains cautious about whether the numbers will ultimately work.
Como's situation with Diego Carlos points the opposite way. Parma have stepped up their pursuit of the Brazilian centre-back, who is looking to leave Fenerbahçe despite a contract running to 2028, with the Serie A club trying to get ahead of Como and other suitors before agreeing a permanent deal with the Turkish side.
Diego Carlos enjoyed a strong spell at Como under Fàbregas previously, and a return had been mooted, but the club's own defensive ranks are simply too crowded to accommodate him: Como now count six senior centre-backs after officially confirming the signing of Willy Kambwala.
With Como unable to move, Diego Carlos's camp — led by agent Giuliano Bertolucci — has already held talks with Vasco da Gama as an alternative, while Parma push to beat both Como and a handful of Brazilian clubs who have made preliminary enquiries of their own.
