The Lombardy club have opened direct contact with Chelsea to assess the feasibility of taking Delap on loan, with the 23-year-old no longer part of Xabi Alonso's plans and officially available for transfer despite a contract running until 2031.
Delap's situation has changed sharply since Enzo Maresca sanctioned his €35.5m signing from Ipswich Town last summer, when he immediately featured and won the Club World Cup.
Como are exploring a season-long loan to avoid stretching their attacking options too thin across three competitions, with only Álvaro Morata and Anastasios Douvikas currently guaranteed a place in the squad, and are understood to hold an advantage in talks after successfully completing the Trevoh Chalobah deal with Chelsea's blessing.
Delap has made 47 appearances and scored three goals for Chelsea since his move from Ipswich, where he had scored 12 goals in 40 appearances to first attract attention. He also featured six times for Manchester City's academy pathway before senior loan spells at Hull City, Stoke City and Preston North End, scoring at each stop, though a senior England call-up has so far eluded him.
His stalled progress in west London contrasts sharply with the impact he made immediately after his move, scoring on his Club World Cup debut before Maresca's exit and Alonso's arrival reshaped Chelsea's attacking hierarchy around him.
Elsewhere, new right-back Yan Couto explained his decision to join Como from Borussia Dortmund.
"The Champions League was a very important factor, and then there's the coach — he's played a part too," Couto told Sky Sport.
"He always wants to dominate the pitch and have the ball, his style of football is fun, and I really identify with it."
Asked what else had drawn him to the club, he pointed to the broader project.
"We have this strong connection in our idea of football, and it's also important that life in Italy is good. It's one of the best places for me after some not-so-positive seasons at Borussia Dortmund. I'm here to play well and reach my highest level."
Couto arrives on a season-long loan with a purchase option worth up to €22m, having struggled for regular football behind Julian Ryerson in Dortmund's side last season.
