According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Como have reached a verbal agreement to sign the 21-year-old, with the move structured as a loan carrying a non-obligatory option to buy worth €10 million.
The player has already given his approval to the switch to Italy. Should the transfer become permanent at the end of the season, Manchester United, who sold Kambwala to Villarreal, would receive a percentage of that fee.
The move continues a busy summer for Como, who have been among the most active clubs in this transfer window as they prepare for a first-ever Champions League campaign.
The Lombardy club have already brought in Trevoh Chalobah, Yan Couto, Kaiki Bruno and Luis Milla among others, with all four thrown straight into Cesc Fàbregas' starting XI for the club's Serie A opener against Udinese on Saturday, a game that finished 1-1.
Kambwala arrived at Villarreal from Manchester United in a permanent deal last year after struggling for regular minutes at Old Trafford, and the defender would add further depth to a Como back line that already features Chalobah among this summer's arrivals.
The move underlines Como's broader transfer strategy of recruiting proven talent from Europe's bigger leagues on flexible terms, allowing the club to assess new signings before committing to permanent deals.
