The 27-year-old had been linked with moves to Tottenham and Manchester City but stayed with Liverpool, where he is contracted until 2030.
Gakpo said the summer had been difficult for both his family and his football career, but he ultimately allowed the situation to play out.
“It was a difficult summer for me, my family and everything around football and life,” Gakpo told The Guardian.
“I just let it come, and it ended how it ended.”
Asked whether Liverpool had been prepared to sell him, Gakpo confirmed that was initially the case.
“Spot on,” he said.
Gakpo has since remained an important part of the Liverpool squad and has made six appearances this season, contributing two goals and four assists.
He has been at Anfield since January 2023 and scored nine goals while providing six assists in 52 appearances across all competitions last season.
The forward also acknowledged his tendency to worry about different possibilities, but said his focus now has to remain on football.
“I can worry a lot about everything,” Gakpo said. “I can't choose. So I simply have to try to do what I'm good at, and that's playing football.”
