Morgan Rogers fired Chelsea into an early lead inside seven minutes, but woeful defending allowed Hull City to draw level before the half-hour mark through Mohamed Belloumi, who doubled his tally minutes later to leave Xabi Alonso's side chasing the game.
Joao Pedro levelled from Cole Palmer's cross midway through the second half, but Chelsea had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, dropping more points despite yet another impressive attacking display.
Speaking after the match, Joao Pedro said Chelsea's front three of himself, Palmer and Rogers have shown they can be a serious attacking threat, but that defensive lapses continue to undermine the team's results.
"I think we started really well," Joao Pedro said. "We put pressure on them, we controlled the game, but we need to improve on the details. This is very important for us. So we need to analyse and improve.
"We have to adapt quickly because we know how the Premier League is. If you drop points, in the end it will be difficult to recover."
The Brazilian's goal took his tally to three in four Premier League games this season, continuing a fine start alongside Rogers and Palmer that has been a feature of Alonso's opening weeks in charge.
"When Cole passed to me I just tried to hit it on target and I was very happy to hit a good shot," Joao Pedro said. "I enjoy it a lot because they are very good players and I know when we play close, we can be very dangerous. We showed that again."
Pep Chavarria, who came off the bench at half-time to make his fourth Premier League appearance since joining from Rayo Vallecano over the summer, echoed his team-mate's message.
"It was a difficult game. Of course, Hull is a very good team," Chavarria said. "I think that when we scored the first goal we controlled the game, but when they equalised Hull did good things. Our team is very competitive and we always have a lot of energy to score goals, but we need to defend better, I think that is the key.
"Hull want to play long balls and box-to-box. It's difficult because you stay in their area and then you need to defend in our area. They like to run and you need to defend those actions."
The Spanish full-back said the response after the break, in which Chelsea pushed for a winner, showed why he is enjoying life at Stamford Bridge.
"I think that in the second half we had more energy, more intensity, to win the duels," Chavarria said. "This team has a lot of talent and it's a pleasure to play with these top players. For me it's a dream to be here and I'm very happy. I feel very good now and I think that the adaptation is good."
Hull City remain unbeaten in the league this season, having conceded their first goals of the campaign at Stamford Bridge, while Chelsea will look to tighten up defensively before their next fixture.
