López has emerged as Chelsea's leading target as they look to address a gap left unfilled since deadline day, when a proposed £47 million deal for Monaco's Lamine Camara collapsed at the last moment following Fernández's £125 million move to Manchester City.
According to reports in Spain cited by Football365, Chelsea's hierarchy have now given Xabi Alonso the go-ahead to move for López as soon as January, with a bid worth around £103 million potentially enough to tempt Barcelona into selling a key player under Hansi Flick.
The interest is not new. Chelsea made a £35 million offer for López last summer that was turned down, before a further approach worth around £40 million was also rejected as Barcelona made clear they had no intention of selling.
López himself has consistently played down the speculation, insisting his future lies at Camp Nou regardless of Chelsea's repeated interest. His value has risen sharply since those rejected bids, with the 22-year-old starting the season in outstanding form, contributing four goals and two assists in his first four league appearances, including a goal and two assists in Barcelona's 5-0 win at Valencia.
That rise in form has pushed his valuation well beyond the figures Chelsea previously offered, with some reports in Spain suggesting Barcelona would now want in excess of £120 million before considering a sale. López signed a new contract at Barcelona in January that runs until 2029 and reportedly carries a release clause in the region of £450 million, giving the Catalan club little pressure to sell unless their own financial situation changes.
Manchester City have also been credited with interest in the Spain international, setting up potential competition for his signature should Barcelona eventually be tempted to negotiate.
Chelsea's need for reinforcements in midfield was laid bare in Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, when the club finished the match with right-backs Reece James and Malo Gusto deployed as makeshift midfielders.
López faces stiff competition for a starting role at Barcelona regardless, with Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Frenkie de Jong and Marc Casadó among the options ahead of him in Flick's midfield picture, a factor that may ultimately make the club more willing to negotiate than their public stance suggests.
