Chelsea could have Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha available against Bournemouth after the international break as both summer signings continue their recovery.

Neither player has made a competitive appearance for the club since arriving during the summer, but both have returned to work at Cobham and are moving closer to first-team involvement.

Palestra's absence has been particularly frustrating after the Italian impressed during Chelsea's pre-season programme. He featured against Western Sydney Wanderers, AC Milan and Real Sociedad, as well as in defeats by Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus, before a quad problem ruled him out around the start of the campaign.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso previously said the defender was approaching the end of his rehabilitation.

“The injury is something on the quad. He's almost in the last stages of the recovery, so we will see. If [he is] not [fit for] Brentford, then Bournemouth for sure.”

Alonso also acknowledged Palestra's frustration at having his Premier League debut delayed after such a positive summer.

“He's quite frustrated after a very good pre-season not to be able to play and to make his debut in the Premier League.

“But I told Marco, ‘Easy, the season is long, there will be a lot of games, and you will play your role, you will have your minutes, you will enjoy your game.’

“He is full of energy, and you need to control that.”

Emegha has faced a separate setback since joining Chelsea from Strasbourg. The Dutch striker was left out of the club's pre-season tour of Australia and Asia because of a hamstring injury, having scored in behind-closed-doors matches against Crawley and Bromley.

The pair's potential return would come at a useful point for Alonso, who has had to manage a number of fitness issues during the opening weeks of his first season in charge. Palestra was one of the more prominent performers of the club's summer programme, while Emegha had made an early impression in the closed-door fixtures before his injury.

The Chelsea manager has stressed that Palestra will have plenty of opportunities once he is fit, rather than rushing him back before he is ready. A return against Bournemouth would therefore give the Italian a chance to begin the competitive season on his own terms.

Chelsea's next Premier League fixture after the international break is against Bournemouth on 10 October. With Palestra and Emegha back in training, Alonso now has the possibility of adding two more summer arrivals to his squad.
