Claudio Giráldez praised Celta Vigo’s character and attacking conviction after his side overturned Celtic’s lead to claim a 2-1 Europa League win at Celtic Park.

Mika Baur put the hosts ahead shortly after half-time, but Celta responded through Javi Rodríguez, whose quickfire double turned the match around and gave the visitors their first victory in this season’s competition.

Celta Vigo had looked composed in possession during the opening stages, although Celtic grew into the contest before the interval. The home side made that pressure count when Baur finished after Haissem Hassan’s cross took a deflection, giving the Scottish side a 47th-minute advantage.

Giráldez’s team did not lose their shape or confidence. Rodríguez equalised in the 68th minute before scoring again three minutes later, first heading home and then producing a powerful finish to complete the turnaround.

The Celta coach was pleased not only with the result but with the way his players performed in a demanding away environment.

“We have to trust this group of players; I always say that. The team gives everything and believes in a way of playing. Sometimes that brings you victories like today’s, which, beyond the setting, was a very complete performance from us,” Giráldez said.

He also highlighted the quality of Celta’s approach, even when they were behind, and felt the team had played with greater freedom following their previous victory.

“Very good football, very aggressive, with our identity. Beyond winning, I’m pleased with how we did it. Even when we were behind, the team was solid and relaxed. The victory the other day took some pressure off us. Everyone is calm and believes in what we do.”

Rodríguez’s contribution was a particular source of satisfaction for Giráldez. The defender’s confidence, he said, was reflected in his willingness to attack and take his chances.

“He is incredible. He is in a very confident place. The contract renewal and feeling physically well give him an extra boost. Today he saw the goal as enormous. Congratulations to him, but I think the whole team produced an enormous performance.”

Giráldez also credited Javi Rodríguez and Hugo Álvarez with bringing greater confidence to Celta’s attacking play, helping the side identify opportunities that had previously been missed.

The travelling supporters made the evening more memorable, with their backing audible throughout the match.

“From the beginning we could hear our people. I think it has been a beautiful day that will stay in all our memories. These venues give you wonderful days like this.”

The win gives Celta a valuable lift in Europe, while Celtic were left to reflect on another damaging defeat.
