Real Madrid Castilla produced one of the great youth football comebacks, overturning a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford.

Castilla beat Manchester United's under-21 side 4-2 after extra time and reach the semi-finals of the Premier League International Cup.

Castilla — Real Madrid's reserve side, who compete in the third tier of Spanish football — arrived in Manchester a little short-handed, with coach Julián López de Lerma fielding a makeshift lineup shorn of his more recognisable players. Old Trafford demanded a response and, for the first quarter of an hour, it got none.

Jack Moorhouse fired United in front with a sharp finish in the ninth minute, and Shea Lacey doubled the advantage from the penalty spot six minutes later after goalkeeper SĂșnico was penalised for bringing down Chido Obi.

Two down and in unfamiliar territory, Castilla refused to buckle. Gabriel Castrelo pulled one back in first-half stoppage time, heading home from close range after a cross from David Jiménez. Bruno Iglesias levelled in the 65th minute, his shot taking a deflection off Dan Armer and looping into the net to send the tie to extra time.

The second period of additional time belonged entirely to the visitors. Substitute Jaime Barroso crashed in a third on 109 minutes, capitalising on a rebound inside the box after a disallowed Bruno effort had kept the momentum alive. Daniel Mesonero — outstanding throughout — then killed the contest with a composed left-footed finish eight minutes from time to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Castilla will now wait to see who they face in the semi-finals, with the draw set to include Real Sociedad B, Borussia Dortmund and the winner of Dinamo Zagreb against Valencia Mestalla.
