Departing Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has described Jamie Carragher's 2024 verdict that he should retire as "disrespectful".

Casemiro is ending his Old Trafford career with nine goals in 33 Premier League appearances โ€” his most productive season in English football.

Casemiro, 34, spoke on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel and was asked directly about Carragher's comments from May 2024, when the former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit told the Brazilian to end his top-level career following a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Carragher had said: "There's a saying I always remember as a footballer โ€” leave the football before the football leaves you. The football has left him. At this top level, he needs to call it a day at this level and move."

Casemiro's response was pointed without being bitter.

"So โ€” it's your opinion. I respect your opinion. I don't like it because it's disrespectful. It's disrespectful to me. What I win in football. But football changes. Life changes."

He reflected on his decision to leave โ€” he is departing United this summer after four years โ€” with characteristic composure.

"For me, the best thing in this moment is I live in the big dark. I live in a good feeling. Everyone misses Casemiro. I decided to leave because I live in good. Because it's the same in Madrid โ€” everyone misses me there. Everyone misses this team. Now, it's the same. Everyone forgets very quick. Everyone forgets very quick. But, again โ€” the mentality."

The five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid joined Manchester United in August 2022 for ยฃ60million and spent much of his first two seasons playing well below his peak level before this campaign reinvented his United legacy. He played a central role in Michael Carrick's side qualifying for the Champions League โ€” contributing goals, leadership and the kind of midfield organisation that previously seemed beyond the team.

Ferdinand, who has a running public disagreement with Carragher, prompted the exchange. Casemiro's verdict lands cleanly โ€” not with anger but with the quiet confidence of a player who has proved his point on the pitch.
