Michael Carrick has rejected comparisons with his predecessors and insisted his approach to managing Manchester United will not change despite the increasing instability in the profession, as he marks 100 days in charge of the club.

Carrick returned to Old Trafford on 13 January to replace the sacked Ruben Amorim. Since his arrival, Manchester United have climbed to third in the Premier League and remain in contention for Champions League qualification. Twenty managers in the top four divisions have been appointed during that same 100-day period, including two at League Two club Barrow. Liam Rosenior was the most recent, sacked by Chelsea on Wednesday.

"There are two sides to it," Carrick told reporters. "There are instant results and the next game being important; but there's definitely a responsibility, our thinking of what the future looks like and the bigger picture. I don't think of what could go wrong, that doesn't come into it. It's what can be achieved. What success looks like."

Supporters have increasingly called for Carrick to be given the role on a permanent basis. He declined to push for an answer from the hierarchy. "In terms of deadline, it's not something I'm really chasing. It will become clear when it becomes clear."

On comparisons with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer โ€” a close friend and the man he served under as a coach โ€” Carrick was dismissive. "I've got the utmost respect for him. But comparisons literally don't make any difference. We're a different team now, irrespective of who's in charge."

Manchester United face Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday. Victory would leave them needing a maximum of two points from their final four matches to secure a top-five finish.
