Carrick on Fernandes: "A lot of it is trust"

Michael Carrick has described his approach to managing Bruno Fernandes as built primarily on trust, as the Manchester United captain continues one of the standout individual seasons in the Premier League.

Fernandes has contributed 13 goals and assists across 12 games since Carrick's appointment in January and needs just two more assists to break the division's all-time record.

His teeing up of Matheus Cunha's winner at Chelsea on Saturday was the latest example of a partnership that appears to have unlocked a new level from the Portugal captain.

"Certainly, personally, I think we've given Bruno the platform to go and perform, like all the players," Carrick told reporters at Carrington ahead of Monday's match against Brentford. "I like seeing Bruno in attacking positions with a little bit of freedom. He obviously plays for the team, and he has a big responsibility within that."

"But trusting him, he's a very good player, he sees things, he's creative, he's got a really good brain. A lot of it is trust and trying to put him in a position where we think he can make the biggest difference."

Carrick worked with Fernandes when the Portugal international first arrived from Sporting CP in January 2020 and said his development since then had not surprised him.

"I've known Bruno a long time and worked with him when he was here, when he came to the club. So, it hasn't surprised me. I knew exactly what he could bring. I think, over time, you kind of evolve and experience helps and you can certainly see that he's grown as well in a real positive way."
