Manchester United have reached an agreement with Michael Carrick to become permanent manager, with contracts being finalised and an announcement expected within the next 48 hours.

The deal structure is a two-year contract with an option for a third year, bringing formal confirmation to an appointment that had become increasingly inevitable as the season progressed.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on Friday evening: "Breaking news, it's now confirmed, decision made โ€” Michael Carrick will be Manchester United manager also next season and beyond. Carrick already said yes to a new contract at Man United. The negotiations are at the final stages. Carrick is staying. Here we go."

The Athletic's David Ornstein separately reported a broad agreement was in place, with contracts for Carrick's backroom staff โ€” including Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans โ€” also being finalised in parallel.

Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox recommended the appointment to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who gave his final approval following a key meeting earlier this week.

Carrick took charge on 13 January following Ruben Amorim's dismissal, with United sixth in the Premier League. He has since won 10 of 15 league games, securing Champions League qualification with a run that included victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Aston Villa. United have risen from sixth to third, a climb worth an estimated ยฃ100 million in Champions League revenue.

He had also been briefly considered as caretaker in November 2021 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was dismissed, overseeing three matches before Erik ten Hag was appointed. His return this time comes with a proper mandate and the full backing of the club's hierarchy.

Gary Neville voiced the sentiment of many when speaking about the appointment.

"He's put himself in pole position with what he's done. Manchester United need some stability โ€” they've not had that for the last few years. Fans like him, the players like him, the owners will trust him."
