Carlos Baleba made his Manchester United debut in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Lausanne-Sport as he continued his recovery from injury.

Carlos Baleba has made his first appearance for Manchester United after starting their 2-1 behind-closed-doors friendly victory over Lausanne-Sport.

The 22-year-old midfielder completed his £70 million move from Brighton late in the summer transfer window but had been unable to make his competitive debut after arriving with an ankle problem.

Baleba was an unused substitute during United's draw with Fulham last month, but he was handed his first start against Lausanne as he continued his recovery.

The midfielder was heavily involved as United secured victory at Carrington against the Swiss club, who are also owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The match provided valuable minutes for Baleba during the international break and gave him an opportunity to build his fitness before United return to Premier League action.

Michael Carrick had previously explained the importance of getting Baleba back into full training after the midfielder's arrival.

“Carlos is desperate to get out there and be part of the group, training fully with the boys. He’s a quality player, that’s why we bought him. And he balances off the dynamics of the midfield particularly well.”

Baleba was not the only first-team player involved, with Matheus Cunha and Harry Maguire also featuring.

Matthijs de Ligt started as he continued his recovery from back surgery, while several younger players were also given an opportunity to gain experience.

Sekou Kone, who has since moved away from Old Trafford on loan, and Tyler Fredricson were among the players involved.

For Baleba, however, the focus was on getting his first minutes in a United shirt after an interrupted start to his career at the club.

The midfielder suffered the ankle problem during the final weeks of his time at Brighton and was placed into rehabilitation after completing his move to Manchester.

His appearance against Lausanne represents the next stage of that process, with the international break providing an opportunity to work towards full match fitness.

Manchester United will now prepare for their return to Premier League action, with Baleba having finally taken his first step towards becoming part of Carrick's midfield options.
