The 24-year-old Italy defender, who came through AS Roma's academy before departing via Genoa, Basel and Bologna, spoke to Corriere della Sera ahead of Saturday's Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest.
"I'm happy here now, but I've left some unfinished business with Roma," Calafiori said. "I barely played for that team when I was very young. I'd like to return. Not right away, but sooner or later."
When pressed on whether the comments referred specifically to Roma, he confirmed it directly.
"Of course. I was young, I played very few games. I'd like to return to my favourite team."
He made 18 first-team appearances for AS Roma before moving on permanently in 2022, and has watched from a distance as the club qualified for the Champions League this season under head coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
"I don't know if Roma can become the new Arsenal, but I'm very happy they've placed their faith in Gasperini," he said. "I hope they can return to the levels I was used to when I was a kid."
None of this signals any near-term departure from north London. Arsenal signed Calafiori from Bologna in the summer of 2024 for ยฃ42 million and he has three years remaining on his contract at the Emirates Stadium. He has made 36 appearances across all competitions this season โ seven more than his debut campaign โ and is expected to start in Budapest.
He described winning the Premier League title as a childhood dream fulfilled.
"Winning the Premier League was one of my childhood dreams. Walking around the city, I realised how important it was for the fans and for the people."
Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke separately confirmed this week that keeping manager Mikel Arteta on a new contract is the club's most immediate priority.
"If there is a singular person you can trace this all back to, I'm going to give 100 percent credit to Mikel, his staff and the players."
For Calafiori, Saturday's final represents the second chapter of a dream season. The Roma chapter, whenever it comes, is something else entirely โ and by his own admission, far off.
